How to get ALL the music off of your iPod for free

Earlier this week, Apple released iTunes 7.0.  As we discussed earlier this week, iTunes added a new feature that lets you copy music from the iPod back to the computer.  Unfortunately, Apple elected to only let you copy music you bought from their music store.  Other music you added to your iPod remains locked away.

Luckily, there are many applications that allow you to copy music off of your iPod.  Here are the best ones that you can get for free:

Mac OSX Users: Senuti

Senuti is a simple application for transfering songs from your iPod back to your computer.

There are many good reasons that someone would have to transfer music from her iPod back to her computer. There are many good ways to do it, too. Senuti is the only alternative that will give you the power and convenience that you need, wrapped in an interface that is extremely easy to use, at a cost that you can’t complain about.

Windows Users: sharepod

About SharePod:
I began working on SharePod shortly after buying an iPod. I had gone round to a friends house and found I couldn’t share my *non-copyrighted* music without installing an iPod management program that my friend didn’t want on his computer..

With SharePod, nothing needs to be installed on the PC, the program is stored and run from your iPod. All you need to do is plug your iPod into a computer and run SharePod.exe

Linux and Unix Users: gtkpod

What is gtkpod?

gtkpod is a platform independent Graphical User Interface for Apple’s iPod using GTK2. It supports the first to fifth Generation including the iPod mini, iPod Photo, iPod Shuffle, iPod nano, and iPod Video.

Tips:

  • Generally these applications only work if have your ipod enabled to use “disk mode” and have “automatic update” disabled in iTunes.  This is just a matter of clicking a few checkboxes in your iTunes/iPod preferences.
  • Copying your mp3s from your iPod back to your computer doesn’t automatically add them to your iTunes library.  You might have to use the “Add to Library” command to add the songs back to your library after you have them on your computer’s hard drive.
